One gate after another kept shutting onto her back end, she would jump everytime this happened. Another loud clank and the whip hit her rump to drive her on. Her mother warned her about being sold, and it seemed it was happening now. She just wanted to go home. Shivers ran through her body as she saw all the people, her blue eyes went big, what was all the yelling? Her head was turned one way and another, she tried to make a dart out the door. What did these words mean? So loud, to loud. "Untrained, 3 yr old red roan tobiano paint mare" She was as flashy as could be and the man in the ring loved to make her run. Her head went up high and she pranced the best she could. What next she wasnt sure she wanted to know. Another horse acted up, they went out the gate to stop it. She made a break for it, she had to, she was so scared. But she only half made it, the gate slammed shut on her, the metal of the gate tore into her flesh and she went down on one of her back legs. That had hurt. Another man spoke "That one will go to meet now" She tried not to lip on that back leg, but it really hurt. The first man telling about her spoke. "Do I hear $100... " The meat man bid the $100, she was a nicely built stocky gal.

They were here, again. It was the same on most Sundays; every Sunday was auction day and if there was an auction daddy had to be there. Everyone knew who they were and knew that out of all seven people on the McReeny's Ranch there were only two women; Mrs.R and Sierra. The McReeny's had three kids, Jackson, Mason and Sierra all of them the spitting image of their father;Mack, with sandy hair, bright blue eyes and a spattering of freckles across their noses. Bo and Carson were the two ranch hands, who were both muscular and more like sons than employees.

With well loved boots, ripped hemmed jeans and a white cami underneath a yellow checked shirt Sierra leaned over the rusty railing, looking for a younger horses. It was her job to find horses for the ranch use while her brothers and father looked for breeding stock. It was a flashy mare that caught her eye, just as Sierra was about to bid the butcher stepped in. The 17 year old cursed under her breath before shouting "$200."

It really hurt to walk, she couldnt really stand it for much longer. The pain surged through her leg. Again she tried to stop, only to be whipped again. So taking the pain the 3yr old cantered on, she called to someone, anyone to save her. Her tail was swished back and forth starting to get mad at the man. Then a kick was aimed at one of the guys. They needed to back off because the mare was showing some real attitude. She reared after she kicked, but this made her stumble and almost go down. The sounds from the audience told that it was close.

Jeff was on his birthcertificate but alot of the people around here called him Tuff. Might have something to do with the scar across his jawline. Tuff was an almost 19 yr old cowboy that didnt alot of the bidding for his father, who was king meat man around here. He was a tall cowboy hats, boots and all. But he had a bit of his own touch. He had a pierced nose, and snake bites. Also sleeves of tattoos under his button up long sleeve shirt. He raised a brow at the female outbidding him. He walked over to her. "How bad you want the mare? How about dinner?"

Sierra jumped from the rail and stood their with her arms crossed and eyebrow raised; defiance was written all through her face and eyes. She knew who he was and who his father was "before you ask me out for dinner I think you should know my name, Sierra McReeny. As for your first question I would fight every penny I got and then some."

Her eyes roved over his face, body then back again. Yes she knew who this was and she despised Tuff's father; hated him for what he did to the horses he bought. There was a crash and a gasp that sent Sierra scrambling back up the railing "dang" she muttered before returning to the ground. Pointing to the run the blue eyed girl spoke again "well, what are you willing to pay for her?"

Tuff smiled at her because he liked them fiesty, and he was hoping she wouldnt just give in and give him what he wanted. Even if getting his way was a good thing. But hed get bored rather quickly with her, maybe even before dinner was over. He didnt go for your average girl. He raised a brow at the commotion stepping back a bit then looking to her. "Fiesty... and rather beautiful... I like it. You can have the mare. Just dont tell my father... you know we arent all what are fathers are. Good day..." Tuff gave her a rather charming smile then walked away from her to the snack bar to get a candy bar, he loved chocolate.

"Sold.. to the young lady in the front... Ill need your #" The auctioneer told her, and the paint mare was herded outta there at last. But she limped outta there and was put into a pen of others horses, that werent so nice, because she was considered wild because of her behavior. Another horse in there from the start was already going after her. Closer inspection showed he was a stud, a bad tempered mustang gelding that had went to meat. She kicked at him to try and keep him away but he was stronger then her. The painted mare was no match for him.

Sierra was only half listening to Tuff as the auctioneer awarded the paint to her. " Just add it to Mack McReeny's tab, that would be under number 25". Finally  the words that had spilled from the cowboy's lips made sense to Sierra. How dare he; how dare he speak to her like that. Spinning around on the rails a steely gaze met his charmer of a smile she was about to speak Tuff  walked off. One last look over her shoulder making sure that her mare was sent into the waiting pens before tearing after him.

Meeting him at the snack bar Sierra snapped "and exactly who the hell do you think you are?" it was a quiet and dangerous her tone. Before the anger could escalate Mason the younger of her two brothers bear hugged her, lifting Sierra around and away from Tuff "put the down! God dang it Mason" The words flew from her apple red lips as her brother spoke "Tuff, man; I'm sorry about her. She's a tad crazy". The big, muscular boy grinned as Sierra stood behind him and cursed under her breath.

The painted mare fought the mustang for awhile, because she was scared. But in the end she stood while the big black mustang breed her. Because of the size of the pen and to many horses she was shoved in a corner as he bred her trying to take his weight on her sore leg. Once it was over the stallion left her alone and she stood in the pen waiting for her fate. At least she gotten a good home, she just didnt know that yet.

Tuff raised a brow at her words to him. "What actually bothers you so much that I called you beautiful or that I let you have the mare?" He wasnt worried about working her up. He actually liked it. He proceeded to order food and a drink, still not worried about the female before him. Tuff just laughed at her brother giving her a bear hug to pull her away. Yeah that family seemed a bit crazy. "Whats up?" He said to mason who didnt seem to judge him because who his family was. It was all business for his family. But one that actually got to know him would know that Tuff was known for grabbing a horse as often as he could from his father and doing better with it then meat. But most people just judged him like his father. "For the record... I was gonna keep the mare, not let my father have her. But you enjoy her, and your day..."

For the first time in her life Sierra was speechless, her mind scrambled for some wicked come back back but her tongue couldn't function. There she stood with the gently summery breeze pushing fly away hairs in front of her face. Mason on the other hand shrugged "not much, just though I'd offer for you and your father to come to our mid-summer BBQ." He didn't wait for an answer before he too started to walk away.  Sierra turned and looked at Tuff to whom she still despised " I most certainly will enjoy the mare." With that she stormed off to the holding pens.

Her father, Mason and Jackson were already loading the horses when Sierra arrived. Craning her neck and looking around the girl soon found her prize with a smile of satisfaction Sierra stepped onto the first rail of the pen and looked at the mare. "you know I think you're awfully lucky. Don't you think so?" The tanned girl asked her in a quiet voice

Nostrils flared on the mare when the woman put herself onto the bars. She backed away from her not sure about the female before her even if human before her had a soft tone. To many humans had mistreated her for her to easily trust another. Her hip hurt, and no one was bothering to take care of it. She turned away from the woman and walked over to the herd of horses. She wasnt at all a mean mare, she just was burnt on mistreatment. But her head turned to the woman again and she snorted, eyes curiously watching her, because she did crave being petted and loved on. Ears swiveled back and forth listening.
